Hi, I'm Jenni Langrell

I am the eldest of five sisters, raised on a sheep and cropping farm in South Canterbury, New Zealand. My upbringing was shaped by the hard work and dedication of my family. As the oldest, I often took on responsibilities to help my mother care for my younger sisters while my father worked tirelessly on the farm. These experiences fostered a strong sense of duty and honed my skills in mediation and negotiation.

My mother instilled in us the core values of honesty, respect, consistency, kindness, and generosity. She taught us the importance of helping those less fortunate, and these principles resonated deeply with me as I pursued my nursing career. Her unwavering commitment to service and compassion inspired me to support individuals and families facing serious health challenges, igniting my passion for palliative care. I am truly grateful for the lessons learned during my upbringing, which have shaped my appreciation for the diversity and uniqueness that each individual brings to the world.

My Professional Career

My professional journey began shortly after I turned 17 when I embarked on my first job as a Nurse Aide, a pivotal step toward my lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. After completing my General Nursing and Obstetric Training at Timaru Hospital, I set off to explore the world, eventually settling in Cairns, Queensland. There, I completed my Midwifery training and began my remote nursing career in the Cape York community of Aurukun. This transformative experience lasted two years and exposed me to rich cultural and clinical diversity, deepening my understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals in remote areas. Over the next 30 years, I continued to work in various remote settings, further honing my skills and expanding my knowledge in diverse healthcare environments. This extensive experience has equipped me with a profound appreciation for the complexities of providing care in isolated communities and has reinforced my commitment to delivering compassionate and culturally sensitive support to those in need.

Over the years, I have developed a strong focus on palliative care, guiding individuals and families through the complexities of end-of-life planning. My work emphasizes the importance of empowering clients to articulate their wishes, ensuring that their preferences are honoured. I have a deep understanding of cultural practices, having worked extensively within diverse communities, which allows me to provide care that is respectful and inclusive.

In addition to supporting individuals, I am passionate about guiding carers, and recognizing the emotional and physical toll that caregiving can take. I provide strategies for self-care and emotional resilience, helping them manage their responsibilities while addressing their own needs.

My adaptability in any situation has been invaluable throughout my career, enabling me to respond effectively to the unique challenges presented in various healthcare settings. As the Managing Director of Advance Care Consulting, I am dedicated to supporting the public health system by offering specialized, personalized services in Advance Care Planning. My mission is to empower individuals and families to approach these important conversations with confidence, ensuring their deepest desires and wishes are documented and understood. It’s never too late to start the conversation.
